Paper 1: Comparative Commentary

Paper 1 Rubric

- What is the Paper 1?
differences between the texts, the significance of any possible contexts, audience and purpose, and the use of linguistic and literary devices.
A pair may include complete pieces of writing or extracts from longer pieces, or a combination of these. The provenance of all texts will be clearly indicated. One of the two pairs may include one visual text. This could be an image with or without written text. The texts for analysis are not necessarily related to specific parts of the syllabus. The links between texts will be varied and could include theme, genre features or narrative stance.
Students are required to analyse, compare and comment on the texts in the light of their understanding of audience and purpose. In order to achieve this, students need to analyse structure, language and style in addition to aspects such as text type, context, bias and/or ideological position. The comparative analysis should be continuous and structured, include relevant examples from the texts and be balanced in its comments on the similarities and differences between the texts. Rather than simply listing formal aspects, students should focus on how such aspects are used to create particular effects.

Sample analysis for a visual text (movie poster for "The Neanderthal Man.") This is a fantastic example of how to analyze a visual text while still discussing language devices and context. Just an FYI, the analysis of Streetcar needs to be developed further.
One of the key themes here is that relationships were extremely animalistic, once again placing the motif of bestial nature to the relationship as a whole. The most obvious of this is the image of the man and the woman in text 1. Although the woman's expression shows fear and male's is anything but love, their body expressions are very intimate. Perhaps it could even be said that all of the body positions in text 1 are suggestive in some way of animalistic intimacy, which may symbolise the lack of emotion and, more importantly, the lack of love in a romantic relationship. Even the colours used show this in some sense. Red is a very bright and vibrant colour, which evokes images of anger, perhaps even strength or sin. These contrast to our popular belief of relationships being full of love and passion. This idea of animalistic desire is further strengthened in text 2, with, once again, Blanche describing Stanley's actions with "maybe he'll strike you or maybe grunt or kick you." This shows not just the lack of emotions or love, especially when Blanche says, "If kisses have even been discovered yet" but also hints at society's absolute disregard for feelings and emotions in relationships during the time.
